US Open blog | What to expect at Pebble Beach

Updated: Jun 11, 2019

The US Open is less than a week away and all next week you can follow our blog where we will be looking at what to expect during this years tournament.

Taking place at the legendary Pebble Beach Golf Links, this course is well documented for it's small greens. The average Pebble Beach green is just 3,500 square feet, the smallest on the PGA TOUR. The average green depth at Pebble Beach is just 26 paces. And those greens are surrounded by 118 bunkers — or six more than the Old Course at St. Andrews. You could also fit nearly four Pebble Beach greens into the average St. Andrews green (13,600 square feet). The key to scoring is playing your approach shots to the front edge of greens, leaving manageable uphill putts from below the hole.

Who does this course suit?

One of thing we always discuss about at FairWeather Golf is the benefit of the RoboGolfPro when improving precision and control. Our pro's believe that iron control will be the key in this tournament.

"Someone like Justin Rose may be well suited to this course,." Say's Matt Edwards, Director of Golf, FairWeather Golf Academies. " Rose often gets it done with his iron play, provided he can get his putting to cooperate. However, if Koepka can use his distance to get himself within range, I firmly believe he will be the one walking away with the trophy."

Others to consider could be Matt Kutcher (who is currently number 1 for greens in regulation on the PGA tour), or even Tiger Woods (who currently sits in 2nd).

What else to look out for?

The US Open tends to throw up some memorable moments. Whether it is Tiger's 15 shot margin at the 2000 tournament or Tom Watson calling his own chip in on the 17th in 1982. The media usually have something to write home about. Could it be that Brookes Koepka joins both Tiger Woods and Hale Irwin as only the third player to win 3 US Open Championships, and only the second behind Willie Anderson to win 3 on the bounce? We will wait and see.
