US Open Blog | Favourite holes

With Pebble Beach Golf Links returning to the major calendar as host venue for the this weeks U.S. Open, we thought we would take a look at some of the most famous and equally stunning golf holes at one of the world's best loved golf courses. Take a look at our list and let us know what you think in the comments below?

7th Hole (par 3).

Undoubtedly one of the most stunning holes on the PGA tour. The 7th at Pebble Beach looks like a short and simple easy pitch. However, with the hole being perched high on a cliff as the waves of the Pacific Ocean lap at the shore beneath it is anything but straight forward. Depending on the wind this could require as much as a 5 iron on some days and with bunkers ready to swallow up anything astray, you want to make sure your iron game is on point.

17th Hole (par 3).

The great Jack Nicklaus won the 1972 U.S. Open here, a tournament that is most remembered for his stunning 1-iron which hit the flag stick and came to rest just a few inches from the cup. A decade later, Tom Watson captured his solitary U.S. Open victory and created his own memorable moment along the way on 17 - majestically chipping in for a welcome birdie to the delight of the watching masses.

18th Hole (par 4)

Despite the two above (which are great looking holes). Our Ascot, PGA Professional Matt Edwards states his favourite hole as the par 5 18th. "It is the perfect finish, especially the tee shot on the Sunday."

The hole was originally a pretty unspectacular par 4 up until 1922 when a course designer named William Herbert Fowler added close to 200 yards.  It's clear to see that it's perfect for final day drama as the tournament comes to an almighty crescendo.
